Our Departments and Programs

In the Liberal Arts Division we offer many splendid Programs and Departments, so let us explore them for a short time. If you wish to know more about any of Departments or Programs feel free to explore each of their homesites, or contact our Division Secretary Brenda St. Peter.

English

The Department of English considers itself the gateway to the community college. Prefatory
to registration in a program, all students are required to take an Assessment Test.
Prior to the test, students receive a letter from the Department that both emphasizes the
rationale for the test--an awareness that all students bring special skills and talents that
must be developed at their own pace--and identifies the abilities to be considered--an ability
to read with understanding, to think analytically, and to respond critically to what is read.
This letter provides an overview of the areas that shape the Departments work--a thoughtful
assessment and placement process; a rigorous curriculum that focuses on critical reading,
thinking, and writing; a sensitivity to diverse learning abilities and strategies;
student-centered pedagogies; and an attitude of high expectations.

Comunications

The communication associate degree program prepares students for a variety of positions in radio, television, print journalism and public relations. Students entering the program will take a variety of courses that provide a foundation in the communication field supplemented with a cluster of hands-on courses in video production, print journalism, public relations, radio announcing and electronic publishing. Additionally, all students will take approximately ten courses to satisfy the general education requirement.

Humanities

At MCC, Humanities includes French, Spanish, Music, Philosophy and Theater.

Graphic Arts & Multimedia

The Graphic Design and Multimedia Department strives to bring you the cutting edge in education
to propel any student into the fast track for an exciting career. Students may enroll in art and
graphic design courses full or part time. There are no requirements or prerequisites for
students wishing to take courses part time or as electives for other programs.

Visual Fine Arts

For those seeking a professional career, the Visual Fine Arts Program offers a
transfer-oriented course of studies that leads to enrollment in an art school or
other baccalaureate institution. Careers in commercial art, art education and fine
arts are open to graduates with bachelor's degrees.

A Liberals Arts and Science Associate degree in the Arts(AA) or in the Sciences (AS)  provides students with a broad background to move directly into the workforce or transfer to a bachelor’s degree program at another college or university.

The courses outlined in the Liberal Arts major fulfill the general education requirements of most four-year institutions in addition to meeting the requirements for graduation with an associate degree from MCC.

The Liberal Arts degree in Science (AS) is designed primarily for those students who plan to transfer to a four year institution to major in the sciences, agriculture, pre-med or other advanced medical fields.

The Liberal Arts Associate degree in Arts (AS) is designed for students interested in eventually majoring in the social sciences, arts or humanities, at a 4- year college or university.
