Communication

Mission

The communication associate degree program prepares students for a variety of positions in radio, television, print journalism and public relations. Students entering the program will take a variety of courses that provide a foundation in the communication field supplemented with a cluster of hands-on courses in video production, print journalism, public relations, radio announcing and electronic publishing. Additionally, all students will take approximately ten courses to satisfy the general education requirement.

After completing their degree students will be qualified for a number of entry-level positions in the field. These positions include writers, reporters, videographers, tape editors, broadcast production assistants, television production positions, and public relations assistants. In recent years MCC students have found work at ESPN, WNBC-TV30, Fox 61, WFSB-TV3, The Hartford Courant and Clear Channel Radio.

Increasingly, students who complete their degree are transferring to baccalaureate institutions. Typically students transfer to UCONN, Central Connecticut State University, Eastern Connecticut State University and the University of Hartford. In recent years several students have continued their studies at Syracuse University and Emerson College.

Consistent with the programs emphasis on learning by doing students are required to perform at least one 3 credit internship. Typically a student will work 10 hours a week at a local media outlet in a professional training position. This provides students with the opportunity to apply their classroom training in a professional environment. Students have the option to take a second internship.
