Philosophy

Philosophy is the study of some of the deepest questions we confront as human beings: What is the meaning of life? Is there God? What is truth? What is the nature of human mind? The Philosophy Discipline provides a collegial and friendly environment to study these and similar questions, and to pursue the relationship between philosophy and other disciplines.

The Philosophy Discipline is committed to following principles:

  • Philosophical pluralism - The Philosophy Discipline at MCC offers significant numbers of courses in Western tradition as well as non-European philosophical traditions. The discipline is constantly working on expanding our commitment to pluralism.
  • Relevance to our life - Philosophy has an important place in the MCC curriculum precisely because it makes a difference. Methodologically, it promotes clear, systematic thinking. Ethically, it emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for one's views and of carrying on respectful dialogue with those who disagree with us. More importantly, it helps satisfy the human need for understanding and constructive use of intelligence and imagination.
  • Respect for students - The Philosophy Discipline treats students as fellow learners, and attempts to give them the help and encouragement they deserve.

Based upon the stated principles, the Philosophy Discipline at MCC has adopted the mission statement as follows:

"To prepare students for life in the Global Era, further academic achievement by introducing them to philosophic issues, thought, method, principles and critical thinking through learning the great philosophies of the world. The students are encouraged to become involved through student-centered learning strategies."
